EU is trying to be like the UK?
I have always maintained that the Franco-German also known as the Common Market of the Empire then EEC, now EU) is only trying to be what the United Kingdom for centuries, without border controls, a single head of state, a single currency and a common language to haggle over ... (French or German?). Ted Heath took the UK so much for granted that he forgot what it really was, I'm sure. Should we leave the EU pathetic and consider to join the United Kingdom while in our conditions? loyalty to the Crown, learn English, take the pound sterling, drives on the left .... stop eating frogs, and horses ......... your thoughts?
Unfortunately, no. Traditionally, the UK was a free country, governed, not only (or mainly) by Parliament and the government but by a multitude of smaller units: towns and cities have their own councils, the Commission on Peace locally based and appointed judges, police were also not accountable to the national government, but the authorities in their own area. Universities are run in large measure, as well as medical and legal professions. All these authorities had strictly limited powers, and what is not explicitly prohibited by law was legal. By contrast, most Continental countries had (and have) a centralization, top-down constitution. The citizen's right to choose its own shares is strictly limited, the State has a preeminent right to dictate what should and should not be done. The trend, I fear, is not in the direction might choose. Especially (but not only) under this government has been increasingly invaded our freedoms. Since 1997 more than 3,000 acts have been passed, each of which somehow violates our freedom. There is even an act of strength that allows the government to introduce legislation that, without putting before Parliament, and even without telling anyone in advance. You will have guessed by now that I agree with your suggestions. Leave the EU now, and begin the slow process of regaining our freedom.
