Pocket knives in schools?
I'm 13 years old and have been handling knives for a long time, perhaps 6 or 7 years (fishing, hunting, carving, etc.). I can't quite understand why an ordinary pocket knife isn't allowed on school premises. In the eyes of a proper user, such as myself, a pocket knife is a tool, not a weapon. In the state of Florida (where I live), a minor is allowed to posses an ordinary pocketknife with the consent of the minor's guardian(s). Why does this not apply to a school setting and why is there not a rule in place in which a student who has taken a proper class and has teacher approval can bring one for daily use as needed? This way, no one who may use it in an improper way will posses one. School pat downs and searches would be appropriate, though, to ensure the safety of students and staff alike. Scissors are allowed in school. We use hammers in our technology class.
I am one of the most old fashioned and politically INcorrect people on this answer board. But let me say this - back when I went to school; grade school, junior high and senior high, I had absolutely no use for a pocket knife on school property. None. Zero.
I never took a knife to school, even though it might have been allowed. The thing for me was, I didn't want any of the other students possibly stealing one of my prized pocket knives.
The only thing I will agree with you on is the fact that school administrators have gone way too far in the other direction in how they handle situations where young people bring tame pocket knives to school. Back when I went to school - kids would sometimes bring "contraband items" to school, that were not allowed. It was usually silly stuff like radios and so forth. The teachers would confiscate the items and lock them in the classroom closet. They were told that if they needed them back immediately, that they could have a parent come to the school to pick it up. Otherwise, the items were held until the last week of school and then returned to the student.
I remember a 4th grade teacher that had a box full of items that she returned to students near the end of the school year. It was pretty comical how she returned all of the transistor radios, cap guns, MAD magazines, and other items to the class. We'd mostly forgotten about the things that were taken from us.
